The Creation of High Art

"when i was a freshman..."

date: April 14, 2008

In college we were all given an English assignment where we were instructed to look at particular pieces in the Philadelphia Art Museum and write our opinions about them. I took two copies of the assignment and on one I labeled "What people want me to say" and on the other "What I really think". I proceeded to fill them out, and it was a lot of fun.

As I went through the museum I was amazed to find out that while I really hated Impressionist paintings and fat ladies lounging around next to blurry lakes, modern art pleases me. (Though not that hack Marcel Duchamp, what a fucking tool.) Sure, some people claim to be able to do it themselves, but I'm absolutely smitten with a lot of it, both famous works and amateur stuff.

Anyway, it's no surprise that since the assignment was really about critical thinking that I got an A (teachers loved me), but it really opened my eyes to art. I found that I could really see why some people *used* to like certain pieces of art, and that it really has progressed through some amazing eras. People should analyze them all and pick some artists with technique they admire as well as product that pleases their eye. And yes, there is a LOT of bullshit out there. Trust me, there was never a time when fat chicks were considered paint-worthy -- that's a goddamn myth right there.

Magic Pen

"Very ingenious"

Love the concept, love the execution. Handy to have all the commands at the top.

The smallest thing you could improve on is to incorporate the "how-to" into the level play. You sort of did that for the first two, but The whole hinge/pin thing is something I skipped at first. You know, for us lazy illiterate types!

Love the music choice too. Front page, here you come!

Mastermind 3

"OMG the voices are shit!"

submission: Mastermind 3
date: April 1, 2008

My tech1 voice sounds so hideous to my hears! Oh noes!

One serious critique, however: the audio quality for the techs is the same when they are heard from afar and up close. Probably wouldn't even noticed except for the fact that I'm DISSECTING MY VOICE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

(Also, you totally need a special link in the movie to loop those two techs talking. I see a real need for that.)

Author's Response:

Actually I considered it but turned it down, mostly because of the minions at the end and their conversations with the Mastermind via communication devices. There would have been a lot of voice quality switching with every camera change, and that came off as very disorienting. So I kinda went with no differences in any voice no matter the situation, excluding the traditional echoey Mastermind intro. Consistency first! Hurray!

Math Attack

"actually really, really fun"

submission: Math Attack

I played this up to level 7. It could have used some sound, and the flipping animation could have been a little smoother.

Also, I really wish some of the longer additions didn't run off the edge of the tiles. It kinda ruined the whole tile effect, "19 + 18" for instance.

But very cool. Keep up the great work.

"The blinking was hilarious."

submission: Anusboy
date: February 25, 2008

The art was way better than the animation, but you probably already knew that. Seemed to trail off in the end, but was still visually appealing the whole way through.

The main character was epic. Loved when he blinked; that was inspired.

Thank you my good man!
